Should Your Business Borrow Money?
Capitalism is built on proper use of debt. So when business owners ask me if they should borrow money, my response is simply, “It depends.” It depends on what you need the debt for. It depends on what kind of return you can generate on that debt payment. It depends on many factors.
Debt is not a problem, but poor debt management is a problem. Borrowing money right now might well be a wise business decision. If you figure inflation is going up, borrowing money now means paying off the loan with dollars that are worth less.
If you are thinking of borrowing money you should talk with your banker about liquidity, solvency, profitability, and repayment capacity for your business and the type of loan you are thinking about. But in the end you’ve got to be able to pay the debt with cash flow from the investment.
